For too long, I was caught in the trap of inaction around my health, wellness, and weight. The idea of losing half my weight overwhelmed me, so I did nothing. But, I always intended to start tomorrow. Change is made up of small steps, and for me this means I take the following actions over and over again: start, learn, succeed, fail, change, succeed, restart.

Action Creates Change

I have lost half my weight and have maintained that weight loss for several years. While I now eat a fully plant-based diet, I ate some animal products for a while when I was first starting out, and I was comfortable doing so.

Entering the plant-based world does not need to be an all-or-nothing decision — especially if it is going to keep you from making healthy changes in your life.

Start Someplace

The most important step to take is to start. Just start someplace. You can always change and adjust based on what you learn.

Reflect Honestly

Honest self-reflection, naming shadows honestly, is one of the most important steps in the process. It’s hard to transform shadows without being straightforward about what those shadows are.

Choose a Path

Start with what works best for you. If you need to make one small change at a time, start there. If you need to make several big changes all at once, make them. If you need to follow a program, do so. If you need multiple viewpoints, embrace them. All are viable pathways to success.

Learn from Successes and Failures

Most importantly, learn from your successes and learn from your failures, no matter what they are, to continue your journey, to transform shadows.
